More Than Just Security Fixes This Month
Microsoft’s monthly Patch Tuesday updates often fly under the radar — most users accept them silently via Windows Update without reading the accompanying changelog. But the July 2026 cumulative update for Windows 11 (KB5101650) is worth a closer look. Beyond the standard basket of CVE patches and vulnerability fixes, this month’s release includes five meaningful quality-of-life improvements and new features that Microsoft buried quietly in the release notes. Here is a breakdown of everything significant in this update and why it matters.
1. Granular Text Magnification in Accessibility Settings
For years, Windows users who needed to increase text size were forced to scale the entire display — making everything larger, not just text. The July 2026 update introduces a refined Text Magnification control under Settings > Accessibility > Text Size that now operates independently from the main display scale slider. You can increase text size in apps and system menus by up to 250% without enlarging icons, taskbar elements, or window chrome. This is an enormous improvement for users with visual impairments who previously had to choose between readability and usable screen real estate.
2. Improved System Restore Checkpoint Control
Windows’ System Restore feature has historically been unreliable about creating restore points before major driver and application installations. Alongside the main cumulative update, Microsoft also released a separate out-of-band patch (KB5121767) specifically targeting an incompatibility between Windows 11’s June 2026 graphics driver update and certain Dell business laptops using integrated Intel Arc graphics and Xe-LP iGPUs. Affected systems were experiencing display flickering, random sleep/wake failures, and occasional BSODs with the error code VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE. The KB5121767 patch reverts the problematic driver component to a stable interim version while Intel and Dell finalize a permanent resolution.
5. Windows Backup Now Syncs App Settings
Setting up a new Windows PC has always involved the tedious process of reconfiguring every application’s settings from scratch. How to Install the July 2026 Update
If you have automatic updates enabled, KB5101650 will install on your device during the next scheduled maintenance window. To install it immediately, go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. The update requires a restart to apply and typically takes between 10 and 25 minutes depending on your hardware.
