Protecting Your Android Device Against Hidden Surveillance
Mobile spyware and stalkerware are malicious applications designed to secretly monitor your smartphone activity. Once installed—often by an unauthorized person with physical access to your device or via malicious side-loaded apps—spyware can record phone calls, log keystrokes, track real-time GPS location, read private WhatsApp messages, and access your camera. Detecting and removing these hidden threats requires a systematic approach. Here is how to identify warning signs and clean your Android phone.
Warning Signs Your Phone Might Have Spyware Installed
While modern stalkerware attempts to hide silently in the background, it inevitably leaves performance footprints:
- Unusual Battery Drain: Spyware continuously records data and transmits background telemetry, causing rapid, unexplained battery depletion even when the phone is idle.
- Overheating When Unused: Excessive background CPU and GPS usage by hidden surveillance scripts causes the phone to feel noticeably warm to the touch while resting on a table.
- Unexpected Data Usage Spikes: Check Settings > Network & Internet > Data Usage. High background data consumption from an unfamiliar app is a strong indicator of covert data exfiltration.
- Active Microphone or Camera Indicators: Android displays green dot indicators in the top status bar whenever the microphone or camera is active. If the green dot appears when no camera or recording app is open, an app is secretly listening or recording.
Step 1: Check Accessibility Services and Device Admin Apps
Stalkerware frequently abuses Android’s Accessibility Services and Device Admin privileges to prevent uninstallation:
- Go to Settings > Accessibility. Review the list of installed services and immediately turn off any service associated with an app you do not recognize.
