One UI 8.5 Is More Than Just an Android 17 Skin
Samsung has begun rolling out One UI 8.5 — its major mid-cycle software update based on Android 17 — to the Galaxy S26 series, with broader rollout to the Galaxy S25 and Z Fold 7 series expected in the coming weeks. While One UI updates are often dismissed as incremental refinements to an already mature software stack, version 8.5 carries genuine headline features: a completely rebuilt Galaxy AI assistant layer, a redesigned Bixby that actually acknowledges what users disliked about it, significant camera processing improvements, and new productivity features for DeX users. Here is everything that matters in One UI 8.5.
Galaxy AI 3.0: Now Truly Agentic
The biggest change in One UI 8.5 is the debut of Galaxy AI 3.0, which Samsung describes as a shift from “assistive” to “agentic” AI. Previous Galaxy AI features were context-limited — you could summarise a web article, translate a message, or circle to search, but each action was isolated. Galaxy AI 3.0 introduces persistent cross-app AI sessions where the assistant maintains context across multiple apps in a single chain. For example, you can ask Galaxy AI to “find my flight details from my latest email, add the destination to Maps, and create a packing list in Notes” — and it will execute all three steps sequentially without you switching apps manually. Samsung calls this workflow “AI Chaining.”
Bixby Rebuilt from the Ground Up
Samsung has largely acknowledged what the community has said for years: Bixby was slow, inconsistent, and far less capable than Google Assistant or Gemini. In One UI 8.5, Samsung rebuilt Bixby’s core reasoning engine using the same on-device AI model architecture that powers Galaxy AI 3.0. The result is dramatically faster response times (under 1.5 seconds for most queries) and significantly improved natural language understanding. Bixby can now execute complex system-level commands like “open the last photo I edited in Lightroom and share it to my Instagram story without captions” — something the previous Bixby would have failed on every step.
ProVisual Engine 2.0 Camera Processing
One UI 8.5 introduces Samsung’s new ProVisual Engine 2.0, a rewritten computational photography pipeline that processes RAW sensor data through a neural network trained on 40 million curated professional photographs. The most visible improvement is in skin tone rendering — Samsung’s cameras have historically over-smoothed skin and over-saturated warm tones. ProVisual Engine 2.0 produces more natural, photographer-accurate skin tones directly from the default camera app without any additional editing. Low-light video also benefits significantly, with the new engine applying temporal noise reduction frame-by-frame that eliminates the grainy texture visible in Galaxy S25 night videos.
Lock Screen Widgets and Always-On Display Improvements
One UI 8.5 brings Android 17’s expanded lock screen widget support and layers Samsung-exclusive customization on top. You can now place interactive widgets directly on the lock screen — not just notification badges and clock styles. The most useful additions include a battery widget that shows the charge status of your Galaxy Watch and buds alongside the phone, a weather widget with hourly breakdown, and a Spotify/media widget that allows playback controls without unlocking. The Always-On Display also gained new animated clock face designs that react to your notification activity — pulsing gently when unread messages arrive.
DeX Mode Gets Floating Windows and Better Monitor Scaling
For Galaxy S26 and Note-class device users who use Samsung DeX for desktop productivity, One UI 8.5 delivers two long-requested features. Floating app windows in DeX can now be resized to any arbitrary dimension — previously, apps were locked to pre-defined size slots. Improved 4K monitor scaling means DeX now renders applications at true 4K resolution on supported external displays rather than upscaling from a lower internal resolution. Third-party apps that have declared 4K compatibility will immediately benefit, while others fall back to the improved 1440p upscaling that looks significantly sharper than One UI 8’s version.
Which Devices Are Getting One UI 8.5?
One UI 8.5 is rolling out in phases. The Galaxy S26 series receives it first, followed by the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8. The Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S24 series are next in line, with the Galaxy A55 and A35 expected to receive a compatible version in Q1 2027. Older Galaxy devices on the S23 generation and earlier will receive Android 17 security patches but are not expected to receive the full One UI 8.5 feature set.
