Personalize Every Conversation on WhatsApp
WhatsApp has introduced a major expansion to its chat interface customization suite. Moving beyond basic light and dark modes, users can now apply custom Chat Themes, change individual conversation bubble colors, generate custom AI wallpapers from text prompts, and assign unique background themes to specific individual contacts. Whether you want a clean aesthetic look across all conversations or distinct themes for work and personal chats, here is how to use WhatsApp’s new customization features on Android.
Setting Global Chat Themes and Bubble Colors
To change the default theme and color scheme for all incoming and outgoing chats simultaneously:
- Open WhatsApp on your Android phone.
- Tap the three vertical dots in the top right corner and select Settings.
- Select Chats, then tap on Default chat theme.
- Browse through 30+ pre-designed color presets to customize your chat bubble colors, message background patterns, and contrast levels.
Customizing Specific Individual or Group Chats
WhatsApp allows you to override your global theme for specific contacts or group chats without affecting the rest of your app interface. Open the individual or group chat you wish to customize, tap the contact’s name at the top of the screen (or the three-dot menu), select Theme & Wallpaper, and choose a custom theme preset or uploaded photo. This is useful for assigning distinct visual themes to family threads, work groups, or close friends.
Generating AI Wallpapers from Text Prompts
Inside the Wallpaper selection menu, tap Create with AI. This opens an integrated prompt tool where you can type descriptive text—such as “Cyberpunk neon street at night” or “Minimalist mountain sunrise pastel”—and WhatsApp’s Meta AI engine will instantly generate four unique high-resolution wallpapers tailored to your prompt.
Adjusting Wallpaper Dimming for Dark Mode
To ensure chat text remains legible regardless of your background choice, WhatsApp includes a Wallpaper Dimming slider. Located at the bottom of the wallpaper preview screen, dragging the slider to the right dims the background image brightness, ensuring white chat text remains easy to read during low-light night messaging sessions.
Privacy of Chat Customization Settings
All theme modifications, wallpaper uploads, and custom chat bubble colors are strictly local to your personal device. The contacts you chat with will not see the custom themes or wallpapers you assign to their conversations, preserving your personal privacy and aesthetic preference.
