How to Enable Dark Mode on Every Android App

Dark Mode Everywhere — Even Where Apps Don’t Support It

Dark mode is one of the most widely used Android features — reducing eye strain in low-light environments, extending battery life on AMOLED and OLED displays, and making your phone significantly more comfortable to use at night. Most major apps like YouTube, Gmail, WhatsApp, and Chrome now include native dark mode support. But dozens of apps — particularly older apps, regional apps, and less actively maintained utilities — still render in harsh white interfaces with no built-in dark option. This guide covers every method available to enable dark mode system-wide, force it on non-supporting apps, and fine-tune the experience to your preference.

Method 1: System-Wide Dark Mode in Android Settings

The quickest way to enable dark mode across all apps that support it natively is through your system settings. On stock Android and Pixel phones, go to Settings > Display > Dark Theme and toggle it on. On Samsung One UI, navigate to Settings > Display > Dark Mode. On OnePlus OxygenOS, find it under Settings > Display & Brightness > Dark Mode. Enabling system dark mode instantly changes the UI of every app that has implemented Android’s dark theme API — which now covers the majority of apps on the Play Store. You can also set a schedule under the dark mode toggle to automatically switch between light and dark based on sunset/sunrise times or a custom time range.

Method 2: Force Dark Mode via Developer Options

For apps that have not implemented proper dark mode support, Android has a hidden override option in Developer Options. To access it, first enable Developer Options by going to Settings > About Phone and tapping Build Number seven times. Then go to Settings > Developer Options and scroll down to find “Override force-dark” or “Force dark mode” (the exact label varies by manufacturer). Toggling this on instructs Android to invert the colour rendering of non-dark-mode apps automatically — forcing white backgrounds to render as dark grey or black. The results are imperfect on some apps (image-heavy apps like Instagram may render photos with slightly inverted colours), but for text-based apps it is extremely effective.

Method 3: Chrome’s Force Dark Mode Flag

Websites that have not implemented CSS dark mode can be forced to dark through Chrome’s experimental flags. Open Chrome on Android and type chrome://flags in the address bar. Search for “Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents” and change the dropdown from “Default” to “Enabled.” Restart Chrome as prompted. Chrome will now apply an automatic colour inversion algorithm to any website that does not natively declare a dark colour scheme. This is particularly useful for banking sites, government portals, and older news websites that have not been updated for modern dark mode CSS standards.

Method 4: OLED Black Wallpaper for Maximum Battery Savings

If your phone has an OLED or AMOLED display, true black pixels are literally turned off at the hardware level — consuming zero power. Combining system dark mode with a completely black wallpaper maximises the battery savings. Go to Settings > Wallpaper & Style and search for a pure black image (a quick Google image search for “pure black wallpaper 4K” will find one). Set it as both your home screen and lock screen wallpaper. On a phone with an AMOLED display in idle states, this can reduce display power consumption by up to 40% compared to a colourful wallpaper with the display at the same brightness level.

Method 5: Per-App Dark Mode Controls on Samsung

Samsung’s One UI offers a unique granular dark mode system that most users never discover. Under Settings > Display > Dark Mode Settings, Samsung provides a list of installed apps with individual toggles allowing you to enable or disable dark mode on a per-app basis. This means you can run system dark mode globally while keeping specific apps — like a photo editing tool where accurate colour matters — in light mode without affecting everything else. This level of control is not available on stock Android or most other OEM skins, and it represents one of the genuine UI advantages of One UI for power users.
