How to Set Up Google Pay on Android: Step-by-Step Guide

Get Google Pay Up and Running in Minutes

Google Pay is one of the most versatile digital payment apps available on Android, combining UPI bank transfers, contactless NFC tap-to-pay at retail terminals, bill payments, mobile recharges, and online checkout into a single unified app. If you have just switched to an Android phone or are setting up Google Pay for the first time, this step-by-step guide walks you through the complete process — from downloading the app to making your first payment confidently.

Step 1: Download and Open Google Pay

Open the Google Play Store on your Android phone, search for Google Pay, and install the official app from Google LLC (identified by the “G Pay” colourful logo). On many Android phones in India, Google Pay comes pre-installed. Once installed, open the app and tap Get Started. You will be prompted to sign in with your Google account — use the account associated with the phone number linked to your bank account, as this will simplify UPI registration. Allow all requested permissions including contacts, phone, location, and SMS access, as these are required for UPI functionality and automatic transaction reading.

Step 2: Verify Your Phone Number

Google Pay requires your registered mobile number — the number linked to your bank account — to be active in your Android SIM slot. The app will automatically attempt to verify your number by sending and reading an OTP SMS. Ensure the SIM card connected to your bank account is inserted in your phone during this step. If you have a dual-SIM phone, the app will ask you to choose which SIM to use for UPI payments. Select the SIM whose number is registered with your primary bank account.

Step 3: Link Your Bank Account via UPI

Once your number is verified, tap Add Bank Account. Google Pay will display a list of supported Indian banks. Select your bank from the list. The app will then automatically look up all savings and current accounts linked to your mobile number at that bank. Select the account you want to link for UPI payments. The app will verify the account by sending a De-registration request to your bank through your SIM — this is a standard UPI verification process and does not charge your account. After verification, you will be prompted to create a 6-digit UPI PIN. This PIN authorizes all transactions and should be a unique number you have not used for other accounts. Never share this PIN with anyone, including Google support.

Step 4: Add a Credit or Debit Card for NFC Payments

For contactless payments at NFC-enabled retail terminals (such as petrol pumps, supermarkets, and restaurants), you can add your debit or credit card to Google Pay. Tap your profile icon, go to Payment Methods > Add Card. You can scan your card with the camera or enter the details manually. After entering the card number, expiry, and CVV, your bank will send an OTP to verify the card. Once verified, the card is added to Google Wallet and will appear in Google Pay’s NFC payment panel. To pay at a terminal, hold the back of your phone near the contactless reader with the screen on — you do not need to open any app, just unlock your phone screen.

Step 5: Making Your First UPI Payment

To send money to someone via UPI, open Google Pay and tap New Payment. You can pay by scanning a UPI QR code, searching for a contact’s linked Google Pay account, or entering a UPI ID directly (format: name@bankname or phonenumber@upi). Enter the amount, add an optional note, tap Pay, and authenticate with your 6-digit UPI PIN. The money transfers within seconds and both parties receive an SMS confirmation. For recurring payments like rent or EMIs, you can set up a UPI AutoPay mandate under New Payment > Recurring Payments which automatically deducts fixed amounts on a schedule without requiring PIN entry each time.

Useful Google Pay Features Worth Knowing

Beyond basic transfers, Google Pay offers several features many users overlook. Bill Splitting lets you request a share of an amount from multiple contacts simultaneously — ideal for splitting restaurant bills. Rewards and Cashback are offered on select transactions and merchant payments — check the Offers section regularly. Transaction History under your profile provides a complete, searchable record of all UPI and card transactions for tax documentation and expense tracking purposes.
